Civic, Corolla, Focus, Astra

Good quality, widely available

Check if your car has lane departure, auto braking, or adaptive cruise

Estimated Total

$360

Range: $306 to $432

Glass

$280

Labor (fitting)

$80

Chip repair would have cost

$75

Savings if repaired early: $285. Small chips should be fixed within weeks.

Quick answer

$200 to $500 for most cars. With ADAS recalibration: $400 to $1,200.

Chip repair for small damage costs $50 to $100 and takes 30 minutes. Full replacement takes 1 to 2 hours. The glass itself is often the smaller part of the bill once recalibration is added on modern vehicles.

Repair vs Replace

Not every damaged windscreen needs replacing. Knowing the difference saves you hundreds.

Repair ($50 to $100)
  • +Chip smaller than a 50p coin or 1 inch diameter
  • +Not in the driver's direct line of sight
  • +Not at the edge of the glass
  • +Takes 30 minutes, often free through insurance
Replace ($200 to $1,000+)
  • -Crack longer than 6 inches
  • -Damage in the driver's direct line of sight
  • -Crack running to the edge of the glass
  • -Multiple chips or a star crack that has spread
!

Every chip becomes a crack eventually. A chip left through winter will expand as water freezes inside the damage. Repair it early and it costs $50. Leave it three months and it becomes a $400 replacement.

Cost by Vehicle Type

The glass itself varies significantly by model. Acoustic glass, heated elements, and integrated cameras all add cost.

SD

Standard sedan / hatchback

$200 to $400

Common models like a Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, or Ford Focus. OEM glass is widely available and most shops stock it.

SUV

SUV / pickup truck

$250 to $500

Larger glass surface area means more cost. A full-size pickup like an F-150 or RAM 1500 sits at the top of this range.

LUX

Luxury (BMW, Mercedes, Audi)

$400 to $800

Often uses acoustic laminated glass that reduces road noise. OEM parts are expensive and aftermarket equivalents may not match the acoustic properties.

EV

Tesla (Model 3, Model Y)

$400 to $1,000

Multiple cameras are integrated into the glass assembly for Autopilot. Replacement requires recalibration of the full camera suite, which typically needs a Tesla Service Center or a specialist shop.

HTD

Heated windscreen (Ford, Jaguar)

$300 to $600

Electrically heated glass with fine wires embedded throughout. Confirm the replacement glass includes the heating element before the job starts.

RNS

Rain-sensing / HUD glass

$350 to $700

Rain sensors and heads-up display projectors require specific glass with the correct optical properties. Using standard glass means losing those features.

The ADAS Problem

This is the part most shops do not mention upfront. It can double the cost of your replacement.

Modern cars with lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control use a camera mounted to the inside of the windscreen. When new glass is fitted, the camera angle shifts by a tiny amount. That small shift is enough to make the lane-keeping system steer the wrong way or the auto-braking system fail to trigger.

Recalibration resets the camera to the manufacturer's specified position. It is not optional if the car has those systems fitted.

Static recalibration

$150 to $300

Done indoors. The technician positions calibration targets at precise distances in front of the car and uses manufacturer software to align the camera. Requires a flat floor and controlled lighting. Takes 1 to 2 hours.

Dynamic recalibration

$200 to $500

Done on the road. The technician drives the vehicle at a set speed with diagnostic equipment connected. Some manufacturers require dynamic calibration only, or both types in sequence. Takes 30 to 60 minutes of driving.

!

Ask about ADAS before approving the replacement.

Some shops do not offer ADAS recalibration and will send you to a dealer afterward, adding another booking, more time, and often a higher rate. Get the full quoted price including recalibration in writing before any work starts.

Insurance

In most cases you should not pay out of pocket for a full replacement. Here is how it works in each country.

United Kingdom

+Covered under comprehensive insurance for both repair and replacement
+Chip repairs are usually free, no excess applied
~Full replacement: your policy excess normally applies (often GBP 75 to GBP 200)
+Many policies (Admiral, Direct Line, Aviva) include free windscreen cover with zero excess
iFiling a windscreen claim does not affect your no-claims bonus on most policies

United States

~Requires comprehensive coverage (not just liability)
+Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina require insurers to offer zero-deductible glass coverage by law
~Other states: your deductible applies, typically $100 to $500 depending on your policy
iAlways file through insurance for a full replacement. The insurer pays the shop directly and negotiates the rate.
iSafelite, Belron, and most national chains work directly with all major US insurers

Mobile Service vs Shop

Both are legitimate options. The right choice depends on whether your car needs ADAS recalibration.

Mobile service

+Technician comes to your home, workplace, or roadside
+Same glass quality and adhesive as a shop job
+No extra charge or a small surcharge of $0 to $50
~ADAS recalibration: some mobile techs carry portable static calibration equipment. Ask before booking.
-If portable calibration is not available, you will need a second appointment at a workshop
Best for: no ADAS, or chip repair, or when you cannot leave your car.

Shop / workshop

+Full ADAS static and dynamic recalibration in one visit
+Controlled environment: no wind, rain, or temperature issues affecting the adhesive cure
+Faster for complex vehicles (Tesla, newer BMWs)
-You need to travel to the shop and leave the car
~Drive time restriction after fitting: usually 1 hour before the car can be moved
Best for: any car with ADAS cameras, luxury vehicles, or Tesla.

Common Questions

Does insurance cover windscreen replacement?

In the UK, comprehensive insurance covers windscreen replacement. Most insurers waive the excess for chip repairs. For full replacement your policy excess normally applies, but many policies include free windscreen cover as standard. In the US, you need comprehensive coverage. Some states (Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina) require insurers to offer zero-deductible glass coverage by law.

What is ADAS recalibration and why does it cost so much?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. If your car has lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, the camera that powers those systems is usually mounted to the windscreen. When you fit a new windscreen, the camera viewing angle shifts slightly. Recalibration resets it to the manufacturer's specified position. Static calibration (done indoors with targets) costs $150 to $300. Dynamic calibration (a road test with specialist equipment) costs $200 to $500. Without it, your safety systems may not work correctly.

Can a chip be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes, if it meets three conditions: the chip is smaller than a 50p coin (roughly 1 inch), it is not in the driver's direct line of sight, and it is not at the edge of the glass. A technician injects clear resin into the chip, cures it with UV light, and polishes it flat. The repair takes 30 minutes and costs $50 to $100. It will not be invisible but it will stop the chip spreading. Do not wait. A chip left for months in freezing weather becomes a crack.

Is mobile windscreen replacement as good as going to a shop?

For standard replacement, yes. The technician brings the same glass and uses the same adhesive. The main limitation is ADAS recalibration. Static recalibration requires a controlled indoor environment with calibration targets, so if your car needs it the mobile tech will either bring portable equipment (some do) or refer you to a workshop. If your car has no ADAS cameras, mobile is just as good and usually more convenient.

Prices are based on US and UK averages as of March 2026. Costs vary by region, glass supplier, and whether OEM or aftermarket glass is used. Always get a written quote that includes ADAS recalibration before approving any work.
